The Letter (Romantic Drama)
Genre: Romantic Drama
Approx. words: 2150
Emma and Jack met in the summer of 2005. She was an art student from London. He was a musician from Manchester. They met at a concert, talked all night, and fell in love.
For two years, they were inseparable. They lived together in a small flat in London. They had no money, but they were happy. Emma painted. Jack played the guitar. They talked about the future: marriage, children, a house in the country.
Then Jack received an offer. A record company in Los Angeles wanted to sign him. It was the opportunity of a lifetime.
"You have to go," Emma said. "This is your dream."
"Come with me," Jack said.
"I can't," Emma said. "My mother is sick. I need to be here."
They promised to write every day. They promised to call every week. They promised that the distance would not change their love.
For the first six months, they kept their promises. Then the calls became less frequent. The letters stopped. The distance grew.
Emma continued to write, even when Jack did not reply. She wrote about her mother's illness, her painting, the changing seasons. She wrote about missing him, dreaming about him, hoping for him.
Jack, in Los Angeles, was living a different life. He was recording an album, going to parties, meeting famous people. He still loved Emma, but the love felt distant, like a memory of another life.
One night, he received a letter from Emma's mother.
"Emma is in the hospital," the letter said. "She has been ill for months. She never told you because she didn't want to worry you. Please come."
Jack flew to London immediately. He went straight to the hospital.
Emma was lying in a white bed, connected to machines. Her face was pale. Her eyes were closed.
"Emma," Jack whispered. "I'm here."
Emma opened her eyes. She smiled weakly. "You came."
"Of course I came," Jack said. "I never stopped loving you."
Emma took his hand. "I have something for you," she said. She reached under her pillow and pulled out a box. Inside were dozens of letters — all the letters Jack had never sent.
"I wrote to you every day," Emma said. "Even when you didn't write back. I wanted you to know that I was still here. Still waiting."
Jack cried. He had never felt so ashamed.
"I'm sorry," he said. "I'm so sorry."
Emma squeezed his hand. "Don't be sorry. Just stay."
Jack stayed. He cancelled his contract with the record company. He moved back to London. He took care of Emma until she got better.
They married the following spring. And every day, Jack writes Emma a letter. He never misses a day. He knows now that love is not about big gestures. It is about showing up, every day, even when it's hard.
